Through extensive knowledge and experience with product applications Soil Solutions® has developed specific construction methodologies, application specifications and equipment recommendations that provide the most effective solution based on the specific project and related factors. These construction methods and recommended equipment are the most effective for use when constructing a road, applying a surface seal or when hydro seeding. Please proceed to the applicable section for your project.
To ensure the proper construction of a road the construction methodology, the application method and the equipment required to complete the road construction must be taken into consideration during the design and planning stage. The following is the recommended equipment required for the successful construction, stabilization and surface seal of a road when using EBS™ Soil Stabilizer.
When constructing a road using the in-situ soil the first step is to have that in-situ soil tested in an accredited laboratory in order to determine the soil’s AASHTO rating or classification as a road building material. In order to determine this the soil must be tested for Optimum Moisture Content (OMC), Maximum Dry Density (MDD), Atterberg Limits, Plasticity, Sieve Analysis and Grading Coefficient. These tests must be done to ASTM or equivalent standards. In addition the in-situ moisture content must be determined using a Troxler or Nuclear Density Gauge based on an average of 5 readings taken over different areas of the road surface. After the soil indicator test results of the in-situ material are complete the final mix design must be determined.
The final mix design is determined by testing the in-situ material with different amounts of EBS™ and cement by mass of the in-situ material to determine the most effective and economic mix design that will achieve a wearing course that meets the road design requirements. In addition to the tests above the soil mixture must be tested for Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS), Indirect Tensile Strength (ITS), California Bearing Ratio (CBR) and Wet & Dry Brushing Durability. These results will determine the final mix design, which will include the actual amounts of EBS™ and cement required.
A grader is used to construct the subgrade to finish grades and elevations (to line and level) as indicated on the plans. In instances where accessibility does not allow the use of grader a tractor and box blade may be substituted.
A forklift, TLB, Front End Loader or Crane will be required for loading the EBS™ into the water tanker.
After completion of the layer works and loading of the water tanker the wearing course is milled to the depth of stabilization and EBS™ is added bringing the material up to OMC. The preferred machine for milling in and mixing of the EBS™ is called a reclaimer or recycler, which has the capability of milling and mixing at the rate of 10 meters or 32 feet per minute. In areas where accessibility does not allow for the use of a reclaimer or it is not economically viable to do so a tractor pulled PTO driven rotovator can be used for the milling in and mixing of the EBS™.
Shaping, compaction and final finishing should be done initially with pneumatic tire rollers followed by a minimum 10 ton steel drum finishing roller. For smaller applications a vibratory steel compact roller can be used.
The EBS™ Surface Seal is applied using a water tanker’s spray mechanism when adequate, using the pump and hose system attached to a water tanker and applied by hand, using a trailer with a pump and spray bar or using a pump and spray system housed in or on the back of a truck.

The equipment required for a hydro seeding application is dependent upon accessibility to the area to be hydro seeded and the size of the application area. Hydrotac™ can be applied using a water tanker, a pump and hose system attached to a water tanker, a hydro seeding machine or manually using a pump, hose and nozzle with the product container housed in the back of a truck or in a tractor pulled trailer. A specialized spray nozzle should be used that will provide a smooth effective even spray rate and ensure that the product is applied at the specified application rate.
Preparation required prior to a hydro seeding application includes the spreading and raking in of the grass seed and fertilizer, which will require a seed spreader and rakes.
