Pavement Surface Defects
CRACKS

Block Cracking - is interconnected cracks forming large blocks. Cracks usually
intersect at right angles. Block cracks range from 30cm to 6 meters or more
across. The closer spacing indicates more advanced aging caused by shrinking
and hardening of the asphalt over time.
SOLUTION: repair with EBS seal coating during early stages to reduce weathering
effects. Overlay required in advanced stages.

Alligator cracks – interconnected cracks forming small pieces. Caused by failure
of the surfacing due to traffic loading (fatigue) and inadequate base or sub-
grade support.
SOLUTION: repair by excavating local areas, replace base and surface, improve
drainage, re-surface and overlay with EBS.

Patches - Patches with cracking, settlement or distortions indicate underlying
causes still remain. Indicates a pavement defect or needed excavation.
SOLUTION: original surface repaired with EBS and crack/patch material.
Recycling or reconstruction is required when extensive patching shows distress.

Potholes - Holes and loss of pavement material caused by traffic loading, fatigue
and inadequate strength. Often combined with poor drainage.
SOLUTION: repair by excavating or rebuilding localized potholes using EBS.
Reconstruction required for extensive defects, and use EBS to seal the surface.

Deterioration of pavement surfaces has two general causes:

Ü Environmental due to weathering and aging.
Ü Structural caused by repeated traffic loadings.

The rate and manner in which pavement deterioration occur are important factors in determining the best and
most cost effective repairs.

Ü Block cracks (early stages)
Ü Wheel Rutting (fill and repair then overlay seal)
Ü Alligator cracks (thick layer) if structural strength remains
