With Angola’s booming trade and heavy reliance on imports from the EU, China, and the US the port of Luanda was in great need of renovation and expansion to accommodate the increased traffic at the port. In efforts to ease congestion and reduce transportation at the port alternatives for on-site storage facilities were provided through the development of dry container port facilities at Viana and Malange.
The Angolan Government embarked on the development of the Malange Dry Container Port facility with substantial civil earthworks, land clearing, and leveling of the area being concluded before financial constraints prohibited the project from being completed. In order to preserve the investment made to date, the Angolan Government required a long-term solution for erosion control to preserve and protect the already prepared land, which leads them to KMS Comércio Indústria e Construção and subsequently to Soil Solutions.
Our Erosion Control Solution for the Malange Dry Container Port Facility
Soil Solutions together with our Angolan partner Mr. Kilamba Neto of KMS Comércio Indústria e Construção proposed a long-term solution for erosion control using our Engineered Base Stabilizer (EBS) applied as a surface seal to preserve and protect the prepared land, which was accepted by the Government in order to protect the investment until further work on the project is able to commence.
The entire 30-hectare area of the Malange Dry Container Port facility was prepared using a grader to level the surface and then compacted before using water tankers to apply the Engineered Base Stabilizer (EBS) in several coats creating a thin crust over the surface allowing for dust prevention, effective erosion control, weather, and water-resistance as well as prevention of material loss from rain or wind. This treatment with the EBS will preserve and protect the surface until such time that the project can continue with no hindrance to any future construction efforts.
