Xstrata Haul Road Diversion

Xstrata Coal, Witbank, South Africa contacted Soil Solutions to construct a Mine Haul Road Diversion to temporarily divert the route of their Mine Haul Trucks. Our local South African agent, Soil & Dust Solutions, provided on site assistance and technical expertise with the construction and surface seal of the Mine Haul Road Diversion. A materials investigation of local material was conducted of a stockpile on site this material was able to be used in conjunction with EBS Stabilizer as the integration of EBS allowed for the required CBR and specification to be met.  This material was used to raise the surface which was then shaped and brought to the proper line and levels then compacted. Then an EBS Surface Seal was applied that resulted in a fully protected wearing course surface.  Soil Solutions provided the design and consultation services as well as the on site technical assistance for the project. Another successful project by Soil Solutions.

London, UK September 2011 Johannesburg, September 2011

Soil Solutions, which has extensive experience in providing engineered, and specifically tailored solutions for dust control in the mining industry devised an effective method of dust control for a main access road at Palabora Mine in Mpumalanga, South Africa.

In efforts to create a safer work environment, increase driving safety, as well as vehicle maintenance and control the dust in an environmentally responsible manner in order to lessen the impact on the local community and the indigenous wildlife, and be complaint with their ISO 14001 environmental management system, Palabora Mining required environmentally safe and effective dust control.

Soil Solutions provided the solution by applying Durasolution® its highly effective wetting agent.  This product is an agglomerate, colourless, and is applied neat, requiring no dilution.  It offers a sustainable solution, as it starts working immediately and does not require routine applications, rather a minimal maintenance application every 9-12 months.  The product works continuously even when then soil is re-worked. This dust suppressant has been formulated to meet the highest standards of environmental efficacy; it is PM10 and PM2.5 compliant, thus meeting the requirements of both the EPA of the USA, and international ISO 14001.

The Mine Management at Palabora took the initial decision to select specific areas within the mine as trial sections to test the performance of the product in areas where dust control posed the greatest challenges.  The areas selected were the parking area at the mining offices, the in-plant road and the workshop area.

The selected areas were designated and where possible a grader was used to remove the excess dust and loose aggregate on the surface to be treated.  Soil Solutions was on site and did the product application using a pump and spray system which is specifically designed to control the flow and ensure that the proper application rate was applied.  Traffic was allowed to flow during the application process so that no down time was incurred. The product was sprayed evenly over the selected areas in two coats applied twelve hours apart which allowed it to penetrate effectively.

The end result was highly effective dust control over all treated areas providing for improved visibility and maximized efficiency.

For a Gold mine to run efficiently and productively there are many extraneous unforeseen conditions that arise and impede the daily functioning of the mine in resulting in hazardous working conditions and that could even lead to a loss in production.

This was the case at Great Basin Golds’ Burnstone Gold Mine, a mine which was in development for four years and produces ore from the Kimberley Reef from between 300m and 400m making it a shallow operation and unusual for a Wits Basin gold mine. The decline shaft to the ore body is 3.5 km long and the main traffic areas became clogged with fugitive and windborne dust making dust suppression a matter of urgency.

Soil Solutions was called in to overcome this problem and after an on-site assessment promptly came up with a perfect yet simple and cost-effective solution:

DURASOLUTION, a cutting-edge technology insoluble dust abatement agent was applied neat over a total area of 2,500m which also included the areas leading up to and surrounding the vehicle workshop, the diesel bay, and the brake test ramp area. The decline presented an exceptional challenge given its high usage; Durasolution® was applied on the Decline and 1km of entrance road.

[message type="custom" width="100%" start_color="#8a8e2a" end_color="#c0c555" border="#737623" color="#ffffff"]Durasolution®, a superior perpetual wetting agent and highly effective dust suppression product exceeded all expectations by effectively agglomerating the dust particles together and keeping the surface continuously wet with no water required. This application results in improved compaction and allows for the use of tracked vehicles, safe for underground application, as Durasolution® is clear, and odourless with no dangerous fumes.[/message]

Soil Solutions was contacted by Xstrata Coal (Witbank, South Africa) to construct and stabilize the gravel access road to the mine. The road construction was done using the following process: Construction of the subgrade to final grades and elevations (line and levels). Scarifying the existing subgrade soil to the required depth as indicated on the plans and required specification. Milling the wearing course to the indicated depth and adding EBS Soil Stabilizer to bring the material up to the Optimum Moisture Content (OMC). The wearing course was then cut to final levels, shaped, compacted and finished using a grader and steel drum roller. The wearing course was then sealed with EBS Soil Stabilizer and left to cure before opening the road for traffic.  As a result, the surface only requires minimal maintenance including a routine sweeping  to clear any debris left from haul trucks,  a routine clearing of the drainage system and an annual or as needed maintenance coat of EBS Soil Stabilizer.

Wilderness Safaris, after being granted permission from the Botswana Government to build an airstrip, which would allow guests easier access to their lodge, which was previously done by helicopter, contacted Soil Solutions about the use of its flagship product- EBS® Soil Stabilizer.

An environmental impact assessment was conducted prior to the construction of the airstrip, as the sensitive nature of the Kalahari Plains National Reserve located in Central Kalahari, Botswana required a solution, which had to be both environmentally compliant and sustainable in terms of maintenance and cost.

The result of laboratory tests conducted by Soil Solutions on the in-situ soil indicated that significant stabilization would be required. The technologically advanced EBS® product developed by Soil Solutions is a highly effective soil stabilizer that has a branched molecular structure comprised of millions of molecules linked and cross linked together creating a multidimensional matrix that increases the strength of the in-situ soil significantly and this technology eliminated the need for importing aggregate and significantly reduced the quantity of cement required.

The Soil Solutions runway specialist team visited the site and over a period of two weeks with a local contractor constructed the stabilized layer and sealed the airstrip. Equipment challenges also had to be overcome- as a specialized rotovator attachment was designed and used in the construction process.

Soil Solutions combined technologies of construction methodology and advanced EBS® stabilizer satisfied Wilderness Safari’s Kalahari Plains airstrip needs while adhering to the strict environmental requirements.

As part of their Environmental Management System Palabora Mining took the decision to control the dust generated by their mining operations throughout the mine. The areas of concern included the parking area for the mining offices, the in-plant road and the area in front of the work shop.  Durasolution (dust abatement application) was selected for these areas as they receive heavy traffic and are subject to large amounts of fugitive dust from wind, traffic and from falling off the back of the heavily loaded trucks. The areas were prepared using a grader to remove foreign debris and to bring the excess dust level down to the desired thickness of approximately 1 cm to allow for maximum penetration of the Durasolution. The application was done using a pump and spray system loaded in the back of a truck and the areas were treated with two coats of Durasolution. Traffic was allowed to flow during application without interruption to the mining operations. The Durasolution acts as a compaction aid, increases stability, continually wets the surface suppressing the dust, is PM10 and PM2.5 compliant, will help reduce dust related illnesses and is environmentally friendly.

Palabora Mining Company with the world’s largest known reserves of Vermiculite and the belief in running their operations in an environmentally responsible way has taken the decision to find a way of reducing the generation of dust from those operations. Palabora shares a common border with Kruger National Park and therefore the government, environmental groups, the South African National Parks Board and the local community closely scrutinize the impact of their operations.

In efforts to run their operations in an environmentally responsible way Palabora Mining Company has become certified for the ISO 14001 environmental management system and maintains a plan for the eventual closure of operations including the management of social and environmental impacts on the local community. Their search for environmentally friendly and technologically advanced products for the suppression and control of dust has led them to Soil & Dust Solutions.

EBS represents the world's most advanced technology in soil stabilization, and as such, has set a new industry standard.  When incorporated into a road construction project the benefits will include significant cost savings as well as decreased maintenance costs in terms of future road maintenance; water usage; dust suppression; as well as decreased vehicle maintenance; and tyre replacement.  In addition, the environmental aspects of EBS allow for a mine to lessen its environmental footprint as well as decreased closure costs and liabilities.

The mine haul road was swept and cleared of all fugitive dust and debris and then EBS was applied as a surface seal. In order to keep the flow of traffic without interruption to the mining activities one side of the road was treated at a time allowing traffic to flow on the other side.

In the interest of cutting their expenses on the maintenance and watering of the roads at Kipoi Mine in the DRC, Tiger Resources contacted Soil Solutions to upgrade and surface seal one of the access roads. The existing road surface was scarified and mine waste from the open pit was added and mixed into the wearing course and then compacted in preparation of the EBS surface seal. The surface was then swept free of excess dust and debris and then watered prior to the application of the EBS surface seal. The EBS was then loaded into the water tanker and applied over the surface in several coats. Satisfied with the result Management has requested to have an additional 5 km of road treated as well as the work shop area and office parking area which they estimate will result in a savings of the use of over a million liters of water per day that they were previously using for dust suppression.

In the harsh inaccessible interior of Tanzania the loose gravel on Barrick Gold’s Buzwagi mine airstrip posed a threat to the aircraft servicing the mines operations. Aircraft are of vital importance to this remote mining operation in bringing in both equipment and personnel at short notice and potential damage to these aircraft caused by the hazardous runway conditions and FOD foreign object debris had to be eliminated.

Soil Solutions was requested by Barrick Gold to perform a site assessment of the abovementioned airstrip.

Problems encountered were loss of fine materials and loose gravel, which made foreign object debris (FOD) difficult to see. These hazardous conditions made it extremely dangerous for an emergency reverse thrust and to compound matters the runway was also slippery when wet!

Having completed an in-depth analysis of the existing soil and surface conditions, Soil Solutions concluded the best solution for the runway was to apply a surface seal using EBS® nano technology binding agent. To prove the capabilities of EBS® beyond a doubt a selected test area was demarked and compacted following which EBS was manually applied.

The first plane to land on the EBS® treated section of the runway was a DC-3 Dash- no dust was visible and the DC-3’s tire marks were obvious on the untreated part leaving the pilots not only grateful but impressed as well- This resulted in Soil Solutions being granted the order for the upgrade of the entire 2km Kahama Airstrip.

The end result after being treated with EBS® was a runway, which became safe for an emergency reverse thrust, increased visibility on approach, reduced rolling resistance and improved skid resistance. Aircraft acceleration was improved, FOD was easily visible and the runway was not only dust free but no more slippery when wet resulting in zero damage to planes landing and taking off, Value …Delivered™ by Soil Solutions.

The Anglo Modikwa Platinum Mine, a 450m deep underground mining operation lies along the border between the Mpumalanga and Limpopo provinces in South Africa and is jointly owned by African Rainbow Minerals and Anglo Platinum.

Modikwa management contacted Soil Solutions with regards to seeking a solution for their Mine Access road which is not only used by haul trucks but also by local buses transporting mineworkers to and from the mine. This was of great importance to Modikwa; a mine, which has an impeccable safety record, and who were equally concerned about the safety and environmental impact of this important access road.

A Soil Solutions team of experts immediately conducted an assessment where they determined that if the road was prepared and shaped properly, utilization of EBS® Soil Stabilizer would allow for a proper sealed wearing course, resulting in a sealed dust free road, that would also be protected from material loss, erosion and potholes allowing for a safer road, improved work cycles, and reduction in water usage.

Mine Managers were instructed by the Soil Solutions team of technical experts on the proper preparation needed and product application method. After this preparation of the road surfaces was completed the mines contractor applied the EBS surface seal.

The EBS Surface Seal provides a protective layer which protects the road surface from soil erosion, crack formation and run off and will ensure long term and substantial cost savings by preserving the road surface and eliminating the need for routine grading and constant watering. This surface is non-slippery as well as being UV and weather resistant. EBS is also PM10 and PM 2.5 compliant in terms of dust control, and environmental and health and safety compliance requirements.

Additional important benefits of EBS® are water resistance, enhanced load bearing capacity, increased tensile strengths and greater elastomeric properties as well as reduction in rolling resistance, reduced freeze thaw heaving and the elimination of corrugation and rutting. The abovementioned benefits of EBS® are of vital importance to Modikwa, taking into consideration its exceptional safety record as well its (LoM) life – of – mine, which at current production levels extends to 2071.

Modikwa continues to be an ongoing client of Soil Solutions for which we also appreciate their business and commitment to sustainable and environmentally safe solutions.

"In addition to mentoring Ms Syed, Mrs. Schoutens seeks to support the Government of Afghanistan as it identifies and eliminates opaque processes and procedures that limit reaching a workable balance between security, peace, and economic stability and growth.  Providing real solutions for sustainable and cost effective road construction and improvements will facilitate economic growth and development in Afghanistan.

As Mrs. Schoutens and the professional team at Soil Solutions have the experience of operating in challenging environments they understand the dynamics of operating in an austere environment she actively and proudly supports Ms. Syeds’ endeavors in representing Soil Solutions, as well as the tree planting initiative and supporting the ‘Wounded Warrior’ projects in Kabul and the United States for Returning Veterans.

Soil Solutions, a global leader in Gravel Airstrip and runway construction and improvements, has completed another successful runway project. This project was for African Barrick Gold, Tulawaka Gold Mine, and entailed the preparation, and EBS Surface Sealing of a 2 km runway. The exceptional results that Soil Solutions achieved with the upgrade of the African Barrick Gold, Kahama Airstrip located 6km southeast from the town of Kahama in Tanzania, completed in 2011, commissioned a second airstrip for its Tulawaka gold mine located in the Biharamulo district of the Kagera region which lies southwest of Lake Victoria near the northwest border with Rwanda. In addtion to the improved safety conditions of the runway, significant cost savings were realized through the reduced maintenace of the runway as well as the fleet of aircraft used by African Barrick Gold. The remote area of Tulawaka posed its own logistical challenges notwithstanding an annual average temperature range of between 25º and 40º C and annual rainfall in the region of 860mm. However the rainy season had not yet commenced, and due to advanced planning and having access to the right equipment, the EBS Surface Seal application went smoothly. Soil Solutions sent a senior technical advisor to the Tulawaka Mine to oversee the project as well as to provide on-site assistance which in conjunction with meticulous planning by Soil Solutions resulted in the completion of a 2km Airstrip Upgrade and EBS Surface Seal in a remote location in a period of five days – another outstanding achievement by Soil Solutions' highly professional team of experts in the rapid completion of a project where safety was of primary concern.

- DUST PREVENTION AND SUPPRESSION SYSTEMS -

When it comes to complying with standard dust suppression practices, there is no cutting corners. Mines in South African have to up the ante by utilising methods that are cost effective, efficient and environmental friendly.

“It’s costly. It’s an extravagance. It’s cumbersome.” What other ‘convincing’ reasons do mines have to come up with to rationalize poor compliance or sheer noncompliance with standard dust suppression and management practices? If only they knew the real cost of their negligence. To get to the bottom of the matter, African Mining Brief has gathered expert perspectives from the leading suppliers of dust suppression systems to mines in South Africa and other African countries.

Experiencing many of the same problems as previously with the Kahama Airstrip, African Barrick Gold decided to upgrade the African Barrick Gold airstrip at their Tulawaka mine in Tanzania. The existing problems included loose gravel, the loss of fine material, low visibility, dusty conditions and a slippery surface when wet. Very satisfied with the results on the Kahama Airstrip ABG management contacted Soil Solutions to upgrade the airstrip with an EBS Surface Seal. Arrangements were made and the preparation of the airstrip began including a light grading and reshaping of the surface, the removal of all loose debris and the correction of all discrepancies in the overall profile of the airstrip. Once preparation was complete the airstrip was pre-wet with water to loosen the tension of the soil and ensure proper penetration of the EBS. The EBS was applied using a water tanker fit with a specialized spray bar to ensure homogenous distribution of the EBS dilution. The end result once again is an airstrip with improved aircraft acceleration, improved visibility on approach and takeoff, highly visible FOD and increased skid resistance (even in wet conditions) making the surface more safe for emergency reverse thrusts when needed. Increased safety and reduced maintenance of the airstrip and aircraft.

Eurasian Natural Resources Corporation (ENRC) and Boss Mining contacted Soil Solutions to conduct a trial section of Haul Road using an EBS Surface Seal for the purpose of dust alleviation at the Luita Mine located in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The existing road surface was in a severely degraded state so in order to proceed the layer works needed to be completely re-constructed. Additional material was required, so a material investigation of local borrow pits was conducted as well as mine waste material and local laterite, once enough suitable material was found we began the layer work construction which included:   ripping and scarifying the surface  and then a mix of waste material and laterite was mixed with the in-situ soil and then compacted to a smooth finish. All rocks and particles above 60mm were removed from the soil prior to final compaction. The surface was pre-wet with water to loosen the tension of the soil and allow for proper penetration of the EBS. The EBS dilution was applied evenly over the entire road section using several coats. The road was left to cure and opened for traffic the next morning. The end result is a section of haul road with a wearing course that is non-slippery, UV and weather resistant, has improved visibility as a result of no dust, is protected from erosion and will not require any future grading.

Eastern Platinum (Eastplats) Crocodile River Mine in South Africa, required an immediate solution for dust control on the Mine Tailings complex, as the dust was causing problems for the local farming community, as well as hazardous work conditions. As the traditional method of using water through a sprinkler system proved to be very expensive as well as ineffective, Soil & Dust Solutions (the local agent of Soil Solutions) was asked to develop a long term effective sustainable dust control solution. With access being a problem a spray bar was attached to the arm of an excavator which allowed for all areas to be treated with EBS Soil Stabilizer. The EBS treatment was environmentally safe; completely negated the need or use of water or an expensive and maintenance intensive sprinkler system; improved relations with neighbouring communities and will remain effective for up to 60 months before requiring any maintenance.

The Declines at the Zandfontein and Moroelabult sections of the Eastplats Crocodile River Mine required extensive treatment for dust control. As the only access point for the Mining vehicles fugitive dust was heavily transported in and out of the declines causing challenges for both vehicles and workers. The declines had to be cleaned removing nearly 400 mm of powdery dust from the surface and walls in preparation for treatment with Soil Solutions underground dust control agent. The dust control agent is a permanent wetting agent which permanently keeps the surface wet and continuously wicks into the soil to suppress dust. The safety attributes of the dust control agent are that it is odorless, non-slippery and non-flammable, make it ideal for underground treatments. Application was done manually with a pump and spray system placed on the back of a truck or trailer, as height restrictions prevailed in the underground areas. The application was done without interruption to traffic and while the mining operation continued preventing loss of downtime or production loss.

Soil & Dust Solutions, the South African Agent of Soil Solutions was contacted to construct the ramp and crusher tip area for the Assmang Khumani Iron Ore Mine. Lab testing was conducted in order to determine the mix design that would provide the desired results in the most cost efficient manner for the wearing course. Once the mix design was determined the construction began. The area was properly shaped including line and levels allowing for adequate drainage and then an in-situ deep milling machine (Reclaimer) was used to mix the EBS dilution with the soil bringing it to the optimum moisture content prior to compacting to 98%. During this process all particles in excess of 40mm were removed from the surface to ensure that the ideal grading modulus was adhered to. Following the compaction of the 200mm layer the surface was pre-wet to loosen the tension of the soil to allow for better penetration of the EBS Soil Stabilzer. The EBS Soil Stabilizer was applied in 4 even coats in order to seal the wearing course layer and act as a dust suppressant. This is the largest crusher tip in the Southern hemisphere and is subject to constant traffic of CAT 789C Haul Trucks.

A stock pile treatment for dust control and erosion prevention was conducted at ASSMANG Khumani Iron Ore Mine, whereby two adjacent stockpiles were documented, one was treated with a surface application of EBS Soil Stabilizer, while the other was left untreated. After three months 169 tonnes of material was lost from the untreated stock pile, no measurable material was lost from the treated areas, and in fact vegetation had grown. Full details of the independent monitoring including weather and wind conditions are available upon request in a compiled report which included three years of monitoring. Despite recommended maintenance applications every 18 months, no maintenance whatsoever has been done and the surface of the treated stockpile remains stabilized after 5 years while allowing vegetation to grow and providing dust control.

The test sections constructed by Soil & Dust Solutions, the South African Agent for Soil Solutions, at ASSMANG BKM Khumani Iron Ore Mine in South Africa, under went the most extensive on site testing ever conducted for an alternative soil stabilizer. These results together with independent accredited laboratory testing conducted by Geostrada and Africon led to the contract to construct the mine haul roads being awarded to Soil & Dust Solutions, as well as the Crusher Tip area (the largest Crusher tip in the southern hemisphere), which as of May 2009, had seen over 2.5 million tonnes of haulage with no wear or tear. The result and performance level obtained by Soil & Dust Solutions has yet to be matched by any other construction methodology.

The in-situ material was tested in the laboratory, the mix design was determined and then the construction began. The sub grade was constructed to the proper finish grades and elevations (line and levels) as indicated on the plans. The amount of water required to bring the material to the Optimum Moisture Content for compaction was determined using the proctor test. The surface was scarified to depth and the EBS was added and uniformly mixed using a Reclaimer. All clods, lumps and rocks over 40mm were removed from the surface.  The surface was then compacted to 95% using vibratory and pneumatic rollers followed by a 15 ton steel drum finish roller. Once final compaction and shaping were complete the surface was left to cure. A surface seal using the EBS Soil Stabilizer was applied using 4 coats over the entire wearing course surface, left to cure and then the roads were opened for traffic.

Soil & Dust Solutions, the South African agent of Soil Solutions, was brought in to improve the access road to the Eastern Platinum Limited (Eastplats) Crocodile River Mine Maroelabult Section. This access road required a full stabilization and surface seal for dust suppression. The sub-grade was constructed to line and level then pre-wet before scarifying to the required depth for stabilization. Emulsified Base Stabilizer (EBS) was applied at a pre-determined application rate based on laboratory results bringing the material to the optimum moisture for compaction. The mixing of the EBS was done using a Reclaimer to mix the material and EBS until the OMC was reached. All clods, lumps and rocks above 40mm were removed.  The surface was then shaped and compacted forming a smooth finish and allowed to cure. The final step was the application of the EBS surface seal, which was applied in 4 multiple coats in order to preserve the surface, provide dust suppression and prevent the formation of any undulations in the wearing course surface such as potholes, corrugation and rutting.  The road was re-opened for traffic and the only maintenance required is an as needed sweeping of the surface to remove any debris that has accumulated on the surface from wind or fallen off the haul trucks.

Soil Solutions was retained to provide dust control solutions for an open pit mining operation in Botswana. The objectives were to improve visibility, road safety and production efficiency. After proper preparation of the area which only entailed a sweeping of the surface, a water truck was used to apply a surface application of Durasolution to the road surface. This proved to be an effective dust suppression treatment which was also effective for fugitive dust. This treatment totally negated the need for using water for dust suppression and provided a much safer driving environment than previous methods and products used by the mine.

Soil Solutions was contacted by Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) to provide a method for stabilization and dust control for the runway shoulders. The soil conditions were such that if an aircraft were to veer from the runway the soil would not support the weight of the aircraft. Soil Solutions provided a Runway Shoulder Stabilization solution which included the combination of two of our products; Geogrid and Hydrotac. All underground cabling systems were tracked, identified and marked prior to any work. The in-situ material was stripped and excavated to the required depth followed by the placement of the Bi-Axial Geogrid which was then backfilled with the previously excavated material to final shape and level. Upon completion of the earthworks and placement of the Geogrid grass seed and fertilizer were spread over the area followed by an application of Hydrotac. The Hydrotac acts as a tackifier to hold the seed and fertilizer in place, retain moisture and ground temperature and act as a dust suppressant while the grass growth occurs. All work was completed during night time hours with no interruption to flight schedules.

Having a desperate need for hydro seeding and erosion control of the berm (embankment) outside their newly constructed offices Soil & Dust Solutions, the South African Agent of Soil Solutions, was contacted for assistance. Soil & Dust Solutions offered to treat the berm with their environmentally friendly product Hydrotac in order to eliminate the erosion problems occurring from the heavy rains as well as to prevent the washing of the grass seed in order to hold it in place and encourage grass growth over the berm, therefore providing a solution to the existing erosion problem as well as contributing to a more pleasant working atmosphere.

The preparation of the area to be treated included the removal of large stones and debris, cleaning of the drains, spreading of fertilizer and grass seed followed by raking of the entire area to mix the seed and fertilizer with the soil as well as loosen the tension of the soil to allow for proper penetration of the Hydrotac.

Hydrotac was applied evenly over the prepared area of the berm using two coats with a simple pump and spray system with an adjustable spray nozzle in order to control the flow rate and ensure the specified application rate was adhered to. During the Hydrotac application 4 mm of rain fell with no detrimental effect as the performance of the Hydrotac took immediate effect preventing any washing of the product therefore holding all seed and fertilizer in place while directing all water runoff into the drains.

After the Hydrotac application an additional 3 mm of rain fell that evening and during the first week after application there was a total of 260mm rain, which had no harmful effects as the seed has still held in place and germination had already began.

Decidedly satisfied with the complete construction of the internal road network and walking pathways completed by Soil Solutions at their Private Estate in Northern Johannesburg, South Africa during  2010 this high profile client requested Soil Solutions to complete an additional Road Improvement project at their Country Farm Estate located in Berkshire in the United Kingdom.

This project entailed the upgrade and improvement of +/- 1 km of existing gravel roads as well as a large parking area, in order to create a more usable road surface that would blend in with the surrounding landscape creating a harmonious, aesthetic and visually appealing atmosphere throughout the Estate.

The natural look and reduced environmental impact were especially important as the Estate has several hectares of historical formal gardens that are open to the public for viewing.

The condition of the road network  to be improved were such that with the proper preparation a surface seal with Soil Solutions Emulsified Base Stabilizer (EBS) was determined to be sufficient to achieve the desired result.

The project preparation included the application of a tack coat of EBS to ensure the bonding of the existing surface with the South Cerney Gravel layer, which was placed to provide the aesthetic look the Client, was looking for.

Once the South Cerney material was placed utilizing a paving machine with a screeding attachment the surface was ironed with a pedestrian roller to ensure for proper compaction and to provide a smooth finished surface for the EBS surface seal.

The EBS was applied by hand along the sides and edges of the road and using a trailer with a pump and spray bar to ensure even spraying and distribution of the EBS over the road surface in several even coats.

The end result is a natural looking, environmentally friendly flexible road surface that blends in aesthetically with the natural surroundings of the Estate, and which will withstand the climate and weather patterns of the area.

The road surface is now UV and water resistant, has increased skid resistance, is safe for vegetation and wildlife and will not require any future grading or watering providing for an almost maintenance free road surface. [vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Limpopo Lipadi Private Game & Wilderness Reserve located in the Southern Tuli Block in Botswana received Governmental approval for the construction of an airstrip on the reserve and then contacted Soil Solutions for a solution to preserve and protect the surface from erosion and material loss due to heavy rains and wind, will require less maintenance, blend in with the environment and be safe for the flora, fauna and wildlife present on the reserve.

Soil Solutions determined that once the airstrip, taxiway and parking areas were constructed that the application of an EBS Surface Seal would be the best solution to achieve the above-mentioned objectives.

Upon arrival to complete the application of the EBS Surface Seal it was determined that the surface of the airstrip required repair in many areas and that the taxiway and parking area required further work as well. A team was assembled and the repairs on the runway commenced using borrow pit material and EBS while simultaneously the taxiway and parking area surfaces were scarified and then compacted again creating a smooth finish in preparation for the EBS Surface Seal.

Once the repairs were complete the EBS Surface Seal was applied using multiple coats providing for a dust free airstrip, which is protected from erosion and extreme weather conditions, blends in with the reserve environment, provides a smooth surface for aircraft landings and is safe for all wildlife within the reserve as during the application two ostriches conducted their own inspection while many other animals including impala, baboons, wildebeest and wart hogs were frequent visitors to the airstrip during the construction period. [custom_frame_right shadow="on"]limpopo lipadi game reserve - Compaction of Parking Area[/custom_frame_right]Limpopo Lipadi  Airstrip Construction

Limpopo Lipadi, a private game and wilderness reserve in Botswana, of 20,500 hectares on the northern bank of the Limpopo River in the Tuli Block, having realized the need for an airstrip due to the growing numbers of owners and visitors, engaged with Soil Solutions to develop a sustainable airstrip that would serve their needs whilst having a minimal environmental impact.

Two years of consultation and planning between the owners of Limpopo Lipadi and the design team at Soil Solutions yielded the ideal design and construction methodology for an airstrip and parking area that was within the allocated budget and would have a minimal impact on wildlife and the environment and meeting the needs of the lodge, allowing guests and researchers easy access, and also being in accordance with the Botswana Aviation requirements.

[custom_frame_left shadow="on"]Limpopo Lipadi Airstrip, constructed using in-situ material, and EBS® [/custom_frame_left]Once again demonstrating the different approach Soil Solutions takes with its clients and projects in developing specifically value engineered solutions that start at design through to implementation.

Soil Solutions advised every step of the project from the initial clearing to completion. The airstrip was properly prepared using a grader and roller, and then EBS® Engineered Base Stabilizer was applied in separate coats as a surface seal.

The result is a 1200m x 18m Airstrip, constructed using in-situ material, and EBS® Engineered Base Stabilizer to create a hard, water resistant and erosion proof surface that is easy to maintain. The EBS® Sealed Airstrip is Dust Free with enhanced safety, has excellent FOD visibility and is safe for wildlife and retains its natural colour that blends in perfectly with the natural environment.

Limpopo-Lipadi having previously been awarded Gold by Homes Overseas for “the most sustainable development in the world” received approval and licensing for its airstrip from the Botswana Government on the 29th August 2014.

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Having been familiar with Soil Solutions approach to the upgrade of gravel airstrips after having worked together during September of 2011 on the upgrade of the Kahama Airstrip located at the Buzwagi Mine, Acacia Mining informed Soil Solutions of their intent to both widen and lengthen the existing airstrip at the Bulyanhulu Mine and once completed to apply EBS (Engineered Base Stabilizer) as a surface seal in order to provide dust suppression and soil stabilization to preserve the finished surface from degradation and loss of fine material as well as to prevent further damage to the aircraft and provide an all weather airstrip. The Acacia mining airstrip at Bulyanhulu was widened and lengthened using a mix of laterite and rocky gravel to a total length of 1.7 kilometers by a width of 36 meters. Once the expansion of the airstrip was complete it was used for approximately two (2) years without any sealing of the surface. After using the airstrip during this time it was determined that an EBS surface seal would be required as the loose gravel on the surface was causing poor landing and takeoff conditions, creating excessive dust, contributing to unnecessary wear and tear to the aircraft tyres and causing damage to the aircraft during prop wash. After the EBS Surface Seal the airstrip is now safer for landing and take off, has increased skid resistance, improved pilot visibility, more easily visible FOD, enhanced bearing capacity, is UV and weather resistant, easily maintainable and most important all dust has been eliminated. [custom_frame_right]Airstrip Upgrade - Dash on EBS treated Airstrip[/custom_frame_right] Soil Solutions recently completed another Tanzanian Airstrip upgrade project. Already being familiar with Soil Solutions approach and performance delivery for the upgrade of gravel airstrips after having worked together during September of 2011 on the upgrade of the Kahama Airstrip located at the Buzwagi Mine, African Barrick Gold, (now Acacia Mining), informed Soil Solutions of their need to both widen and lengthen the existing airstrip at the Bulyanhulu Mine and once completed to apply EBS (Engineered Base Stabilizer) as a surface seal for erosion control and dust suppression. The charter pilots that work for Acacia mining were also supportive of this project, knowing the superior results that were achieved at the Kahama airstrip and having significantly decreased the damage to the planes. The Bulyanhulu Mine is in northwest Tanzania, in the Kahama district of the Shinyanga region, approximately 55 km south of Lake Victoria and 150 km southwest of the city of Mwanza. The airstrip at Bulyanhulu was widened and lengthened using a mix of laterite and rocky gravel to a total length of 1.7 kilometers by a width of 36 meters, and has regular landings of a Dash and King Air 350. The initial stage of the project was the expansion of the airstrip, due to a number of reasons, the airstrip was left untreated for nearly two years.  During this time the loose gravel on the surface was causing poor landing and takeoff conditions, creating excessive dust, contributing to unnecessary wear and tear to the aircraft tyres and causing damage to the aircraft during prop wash.   The rainy seasons had resulted in material loss, and allowed erosion to occur.  The difference between this airstrip and the Kahama airstrip were now very profound, and led to the decision for a EBS application. Soil Solutions sent a senior technical advisor to oversee the preparation and subsequent EBS Surface Seal of the Airstrip during November 2014.  The preparation and application process took just over 6 days to complete, including delays due to rain. The benefits provided included: a flexible and water resistant surface which will be protected from erosion, loss of fines, cracking and pothole formation and most importantly will eliminate dust, provide for improved skid resistance, safety, visibility and a significant reduction in both runway and aircraft maintenance. Additional benefits include highly visible FOD (foreign object debris), improved pilot visibility on approach and take off, a continuous hard smooth surface, extended aircraft engine and tyre life, use of an environmentally friendly product and most important NO DUST resulting in another successful Intelligent Airstrip project completed by the Soil Solutions team.

Runway stabilization and dust control of  the BG Bolivia La Vertiente Airstrip

BG Group is a British Multinational oil and gas company operating in 25 countries across Africa, Asia, Australasia, Europe, North America and South America. Soil Solutions latest project was located at one of its gas plants in the northern part of Bolivia.

Soil Solutions was contacted by BG Bolivia to provide a method of runway stabilization and dust control for the La Vertiente runway. The existing problems included loose gravel, the loss of fine material, low visibility, dust conditions and a slippery surface when wet. Such conditions did not allow for the use of the runway during and after rainfalls, which significantly limited the BG plant operations.

As BG Group is committed to the continuous improvement of the safety of their employees (Value Based Safety Strategy) Soil Solutions was selected to improve the quality and safety of the runway.

The Team at BG followed the preparation instructions provided by Soil Solutions and had the runway graded and compacted with all loose material removed.  Having correct preparation and two water tankers available the EBS Surface Seal application could be completed in 5 days.

Soil Solutions oversaw the application that resulted in a hard, water resistant, corrosion proof, dust free surface that significantly enhanced safety standards. With this upgrade La Vertiente airstrip has highly visible FOD and increased skid resistance even in the wet conditions.

With the application of the EBS, BG Bolivia is significantly increasing the safety and reducing its annual airstrip maintenance and operational costs, as well as environmental impact. About the Binona Radio Control Race Track

Located in Al Ain, UAE’s 4th largest city approximately 160km from Abu Dhabi, is the new Al Ain Sports Club which is home to the 25,000 seat Hazza Bin Zayed (HBZ) Stadium as well as the Binona Radio Control Race Track. The Binona Radio Control Race Track is not only home to the RC Championships but also the 1/8 Buggy and Truggy International Off-Road Race, the UAE National Day Race as well as being named the host location of the 2016 Worlds. The race track facility has both a 1/8 scale (195 feet wide x 125 feet long) and 1/10 scale track (75 feet wide x 100 feet long) with 15 foot wide lanes separated by 4 inch corrugated piping secured to the surface with 12 inch stakes to contain the cars within each racing lane. The track layouts have off-cambered, flat and bermed corners with 4 to 6 jump sections per layout, ranging from doubles, triples, step ups, whoops, elevation changes and tabletops. The perimeters of the tracks have a 4-foot tall chain link fence that is 5 feet away from the edge of the track. This borders the entire track and contains any runaway or out of control cars from reaching spectators or pit areas.

Racing track surface treatment & seal

75 truck loads of clay type material were brought in and compacted then treated with an EBS Surface Seal to preserve and protect the racing surface and prevent dust allowing it to take rubber and groove up well while providing medium to high bite traction. With Angola’s booming trade and heavy reliance on imports from the EU, China and the US the port of Luanda was in great need of renovation and expansion to accommodate the increased traffic at the port. In efforts to ease congestion and reduce transportation at the port alternatives for on-site storage facilities were provided through the development of dry container port facilities at Viana and Malange.

The Angolan Government embarked on the development of the Malange Dry Container Port facility with substantial civil earthworks, land clearing and leveling of the area being concluded before financial constraints prohibited the project from being completed. In order to preserve the investment made to date the Angolan Government required a long-term solution for erosion control to preserve and protect the already prepared land, which lead them to KMS Comércio Indústria e Construção and subsequently to Soil Solutions.

Our Erosion Control Solution for the Malange Dry Container Port Facility

Soil Solutions together with our Angolan partner Mr. Kilamba Neto of KMS Comércio Indústria e Construção proposed a long-term solution for erosion control using our Engineered Base Stabilizer (EBS) applied as a surface seal to preserve and protect the prepared land, which was accepted by the Government in order to protect the investment until further work on the project is able to commence.

The entire 30-hectare area of the Malange Dry Container Port facility was prepared using a grader to level the surface and then compacted before using water tankers to apply the Engineered Base Stabilizer (EBS) in several coats creating a thin crust over the surface allowing for dust prevention, effective erosion control, weather and water resistance as well as prevention of material loss from rain or wind. This treatment with the EBS will preserve and protect the surface until such time that the project can continue with no hindrance to any future construction efforts. [vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Conforzi Plantation is a family owned Tea Estate located in in the southern region of the Thyolo district, which is at an altitude of 3000 feet in the warm heart of Africa – Malawi.  An area of outstanding beauty with precious and fragile rainforests, not far from the central business hub of the country, called Blantyre; which is just 40 kilometers away.

Back in October of 2007 Conforzi was looking for a method of upgrading the airstrip on the plantation, which is used for the transport of the tea they produce.  Mr. Nick Whyte, owner of Makandi Aviation the company that applies fertilizer over the entire plantation by air recommended that an EBS Surface Seal would be the ideal solution for the upgrade to the airstrip.

Soil Solutions provided the Engineered Base Stabilizer (EBS) and Makandi Aviation prepared the airstrip and subsequently applied the EBS Surface Seal. The application of the EBS Surface Seal seals and protects the surface from erosion, loss of fines, cracking or pothole formation and most importantly eliminates dust and allows for increased safety, visibility, and significant reduction in runway maintenance as well as aircraft maintenance.

After 8 years with virtually no maintenance to the airstrip it had become time to give the surface some needed attention. In October of 2015, with the assistance of Makandi Aviation, the airstrip surface was lightly skimmed using a grader to remove any imperfections, all oversized particles were removed and EBS was applied as a surface seal using several coats to once again preserve and protect the surface providing a safe, low maintenance, dust free, environment friendly airstrip for easy transportation of the tea.[flat_button text="Watch Intro to Intelligent Airstrips Video" title="Videos" url="http://www.soilsolutions.com/intelligent-airstrips-video/" padding="10px 20px" bg_color="#8eb84f" border_color="#5a5d19" border_width="1px" text_color="#FFFFFF" text_size="14px" align="right" target="_self"]

[custom_frame_right shadow="on"]Resolute Mining Syama Mine Access Road Surface Seal[/custom_frame_right] About the Syama Mine

Syama Mine is located in the South of Mali, West Africa 300km Southeast of the Capital of Bamako and 30km from the Cote d’Ivoire border. While on site upgrading the airstrip a decision was taken to further observe the performance of the EBS Soil Stabilizer supplied by Soil Solutions under road traffic rather than air traffic. The access road from the main gate to the entrance of the camp was selected for the application of an EBS Surface Seal.

Syama Mine Access Road Surface Seal

The Syama mine access road was prepared using a grader to skim the surface to remove any loose debris and to crown the surface for proper drainage. Once prepared the access road was surface sealed using multiple coats of the EBS Soil Stabilizer. The EBS Surface Seal will preserve and protect the road surface from erosion, the formation of any undulations in surface (including potholes, corrugation and rutting), provide improved skid and rolling resistance, eliminate dust and provide a safer working and more pleasant working environment. Wheelchair pathway access throughout the Estate needed

Confined to a wheelchair and needing access through the garden and to essential points throughout the Estate Soil Solutions was contacted to provide a solution for wheelchair access. A pathway around and throughout the Estate was constructed and sealed using EBS Soil Stabilizer.

Wheelchair Pathway construction solution

The wheelchair pathway was constructed using soil on the Estate. The soil was sieved to remove all oversize material then mixed with EBS and water in a cement mixer to create a slurry. The slurry was placed and then spread to an even thickness. The surface was then made smooth using trowels and allowed to cure before the application of an EBS Surface Seal, which seals and protects the pathway from erosion, cracking and the effects from heavy rains.

The Result

The end result is a pathway which is usable year round in any weather conditions that provides wheelchair access throughout and around the Estate allowing the owner to enjoy the garden, the ponds, swimming pool and to reach any of the essential areas to keep the Estate fully functional. About the Surama Guyana Gravel Airstrip

[caption id="attachment_8830" align="alignright" width="300"]Surama Guyana Gravel Airstrip Aerial view Aerial View of Surama Airstrip before upgrade[/caption]

The Surama airstrip is located in the heart of Guyana set within a savannah and surrounded by wetlands, forests, rivers and the Pakaraima Mountains. Surama shares a common border with the Iwokrama International Centre for Conservation and Development along the Burro-Burro River.

Airstrip Upgrade

In an attempt to draw more tourists to this vast untouched part of the World the Guyana Government approached JR Ranch Inc. to find a solution for the upgrading of the local airstrips. A decision was made that Surama would be the first of the airstrips to be extended and upgraded. JR Ranch contacted Soil Solutions to provide technical assistance as well as the Engineered Base Stabilizer (EBS) to preserve the finished surface from degradation and loss of fine material, provide dust suppression, prevent aircraft damage all on an improved surface, which is usable year round in any weather conditions.

JR Ranch with instructions from Soil Solutions prepared the airstrip prior to our team’s arrival. The airstrip was inspected, final shaping and leveling was completed, water trucks and pumps were assembled and the airstrip was compacted to a smooth finish prior to the application of the EBS Surface Seal. The EBS was applied utilizing three water tankers, which were completely constructed including the spray bars by JR Ranch allowing for timeous and efficient application.

The application of the EBS Surface Seal seals and protects the surface from erosion; loss of fines, cracking and most importantly eliminates dust allowing for increased safety, visibility and a significant reduction in runway as well as aircraft maintenance. Additionally the upgraded airstrip allows for improved aircraft acceleration, increased skid resistance, reduced damage to aircraft and better pilot visibility.

The environmentally friendly upgrade of the Surama Guyana Gravel Airstrip completed in conjunction with JR Ranch and Soil Solutions has provided tourists with an opportunity to explore this amazingly untouched eco-tourist part of Guyana within the Amazon forest. Upon completion of the airstrip several of the local Governmental Ministers inspected and approved the Surama airstrip.

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]EBS for gravel mine Airstrips and runwaysMine Airstrips (Gravel Airstrips on Mining Sites) play a critical role in the Mining operation itself. Many Mines are located in remote locations, so access by air is the only way that management and personnel can reach site. In terms of Health & Safety regulations and policies Mining operations have to have the immediate ability to evacuate due to a medical or security emergency, having an airstrip and the condition of that airstrip could be the difference between life and death.

Soil Solutions provides a very important service in terms of providing cost effective and value engineered solutions for the construction, improvement and maintenance of airstrips and runways on Mining Operations that let the mine - not have to allocate excessive resources to maintaining a safe year round airstrip.    Dust Control at Active Points with IDM Industrial Dust Machines

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Industrial Dust machines - IDMSoil Solutions development of Industrial Dust Machines known as "IDM" there are several standard models and we also can tailor make a machine that fits the specification required to achieve the dust control needed. These IDM machines are compact mobile units that operate as individual units that are completely self contained.

The IDM units are mounted on a flatbed - and are powered by a compact generator unit and can spray water or a chemical dust suppressant up to 600 meters - allowing the dust to be captured while airborne and brought down to the ground effectively preventing this airborne dust from travelling. [vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Nestlé Middle East was founded in 1997 in Jebel Ali Free Zone, Dubai, and today serves as a regional hub to fulfill the needs of the GCC, the Levant, Iran and Iraq markets. To date, Nestlé has invested more than USD 400 million in the region, owning and operating 14 factories and 16 offices. These capital investments have contributed heavily to creating job opportunities, enhancing technological and manufacturing capabilities, and fostering national economies around the region.

Nestlé Waters have signed an agreement with the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) Higher Corporation for Specialized Economic Zones to build a 100 million Emirati Dirhams water factory in Abu Dhabi. The completed factory is expected to provide up to 100 jobs in its first few years of operation, producing Nestlé Pure Life brand for the United Arab Emirates and lower Gulf. The factory will be Nestlé Waters’ 16th in the Middle East and second in the UAE, where an existing plant has been operational at Al-Qouz Industrial Area since 2003, then relocated to Techno Park in the Jebel Ali Free zone in Dubai in 2010.

Nestlé Middle East contacted Soil Solutions Middle East to provide a solution for sand stabilization and dust prevention outside their factory.

The SSME team conducted a site inspection and determined that with a little preparatory work the area could be treated with EBS Soil Stabilizer, which would provide the solution required by Nestlé. The area was prepared by removing the excess accumulated sand and sweeping the surface, once prepared the surface was treated with the EBS Soil Stabilizer utilizing a pump and spray system then allowed to cure before opening back up to pedestrian traffic.

The treatment with the EBS Soil Stabilizer will eliminate the drifting sand, prevent dust and provide a healthier and safer working environment.

[vc_row][vc_column width="1/2" css=".vc_custom_1487028167984{padding-right: 25px !important;}"][vc_column_text]The Fairview airstrip is located in the heart of Guyana and surrounded by wetlands, forests, rivers and mountains.

In an attempt to draw more tourists to this vast untouched part of the World and to the Iwokrama International Centre for Conservation and Development the Guyana Government approached JR Ranch Inc. to find a solution for the upgrading of the local airstrips. A decision was made that Surama would be the first of the airstrips to be extended and upgraded. After the successful completion of the Surama airstrip the go ahead was given to proceed with the Fairview Airstrip, also referred to as the Iwokrama Aerodrome.

The airstrip was inspected, borrow pit material was brought in and placed, a layer was stabilized and then final shaping and levelling were completed, water trucks and pumps were assembled and the airstrip was compacted to a smooth finish prior to the application of the EBS Surface Seal. The EBS was applied utilizing two water tankers, which were completely constructed including the spray bars by JR Ranch allowing for timeous and efficient application.

The application of the EBS Surface Seal seals and protects the surface from erosion; loss of fines, cracking and most importantly eliminates dust allowing for increased safety, visibility and a significant reduction in airstrip as well as aircraft maintenance. Additionally the upgraded airstrip allows for improved aircraft acceleration, increased skid resistance, reduced damage to aircraft and better pilot visibility.

Fairview Airstrip Upgrade

The environmentally friendly upgrade of the Fairview airstrip completed in conjunction with JR Ranch and Soil Solutions has provided tourists with an opportunity to explore this amazingly untouched eco-tourist part of Guyana within the Amazon forest.

“The completion of the Fairview Aerodrome will result in easier access to the Iwokrama Rainforest Project which will be a great boost to the tourism industry.” - President David Granger

President Granger emphasized his desire to see the area turned into an economic, educational and environmental hub, which will not be of great benefit to the young people but put Guyana on the map.

President Granger describes Iwokrama as “the green heart of Guyana”, labeling it the single most important environmental project which will be much more accessible with the upgrade and extension of the Fairview Aerodrome in order to accommodate the most modern aircraft in Guyana and many more international aircraft.

Eco-tourism - Guyana Case Study

For many countries, Eco-Tourism has become an important sector that can have a positive economic impact and help to further  develop  the economy. If managed properly, eco-tourism can be a powerful economic and social tool.  Eco-tourism is a sensitive industry and it is important to achieve a managed balance between development and the financial benefits.[/content_block]

[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner css=".vc_custom_1501629428148{padding: 15px !important;}"][vc_column_inner width="1/2" css=".vc_custom_1501629414809{padding: 15px !important;}"][vc_column_text]

Sustainable tourism development requires strong political leadership to ensure wide participation of all involved parts. According to the United Nations Environment Programme, the three main benefits that eco-tourism brings to the local communities are: enhancing economic opportunity; protecting natural and cultural heritage; and advancing the quality of life for all concerned.[pullquote style="right" quote="dark"]Eco-tourism has the potential to increase economic and financial well being by creating jobs for local residents that provide increased income and living standards.[/pullquote]

Sustainable tourism activities can be planned to fund specific local projects, such as building a new health clinic or funding an ongoing school program. Thereby allowing the tourist to contribute to a viable project and making a difference.   In addition, local governments  benefit through tax revenues generated by visitors, which in turn fund local activities related to the management of the protected area.

The better managed a protected area is, the more tourists it will attract. Last but not leas, tourism has the potential to be a major funding source for preservation and conservation, and can help overcome the challenge of  inconsistent donor funding.

However, in order to build the tourism industry, it is necessary to create the essential infrastructure. An example is Guyana, a small country on South America’s North Atlantic Coast, known for its border on the - dense tropical Amazon rainforest, , until recently it attracted only an estimated 2,500 leisure visitors annually. That’s about the number that descends on Peru’s Machu Picchu in a single day- this was due to a lack of the infrastructure that made accessibility to the area a challenge.

[/custom_frame_left]This situation is now changing due to a government program to upgrade airstrips across the four hinterland Regions. In one of his interviews, President Granger spoke of the importance of proper infrastructure in the hinterland, the lack of which is a major impediment to development. The President has made infrastructure improvement a priority for his Government in order to ensure  that these outlying areas will no longer be cut off from the coast.

For example, the trip via road to Iwokrama from Ogle takes on average about 16 hours, is very expensive and difficult. With the completion of the Fairview Airstrip, tourists are now able to travel to the same location in less than an hour.  President Granger has also repeatedly emphasized that improvement in infrastructure will allow the area to become  an important economic, educational and environmental hub that not only be of great benefit to young people but also, it will put Guyana on the eco-tourism map.

The application of the EBS Surface Seal seals and protects the surface from erosion; loss of fines, cracking and most importantly eliminates dust allowing for increased safety, visibility and a significant reduction in required maintenance of the airstrip.   In addition the upgraded airstrip allows for larger aircraft to land, as well as the ability to land year round due to improved aircraft acceleration and increased skid resistance.

QuarriesA Solution or a Dust Problem?

For centuries man has used a stone to build  their surroundings and villages and then later entire cities.  Stones were used to build castles, walls, churches and important buildings. As the demand for this material has been constantly growing, so is the demand for modern quarrying.

[/content_block]

[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner css=".vc_custom_1501629428148{padding: 15px !important;}"][vc_column_inner width="1/2" css=".vc_custom_1501629414809{padding: 15px !important;}"][vc_column_text]

Quarries

Stone quarrying is a process by which rock is extracted from the ground and crushed to produce aggregate, which is then screened into desired sizes. This screened aggregate is then used for the construction of roads, rail lines, bridges, hospitals, schools, airports, factories, and homes, all of which has crucial impact on economic development of any country. There is no doubt that aggregate is an essential part of the modern economy, but what are the environmental consequences of the industrial stone processing and how they can be mitigated?
The challenge we face is to balance the effects of development and the environment, this post highlights ways in which this can be done.

Quarrying and the Environment

Modern quarrying is raising various environmental concerns including land disturbance, noise, ground vibrations and emission of dust arising from movement of machinery and rock blasting. In this post, we will be focusing on the consequences of dust emission from the quarrying process.

What is Dust?

Dust is solid particles ranging in size from below 1 µm up to around 100 µm, that become airborne, depending on their origin, physical characteristics and ambient conditions. Generally, the smaller the particle size, the more hazardous it is to health.

Impact of Dust in Quarries

There is no doubt or argument that dust pollution in quarries poses various health risks to its workers as well as to the surrounding communities. Such risks include respiratory ailments, skin and eye problems, and safety issues due to poor visibility. The dust particle size, concentration, chemical composition and length of the exposure are factors considered in evaluating the health risks involved. Long-term severe exposure can pose the risk of developing silicosis, a fatal lung disease. Occupational exposure to dust is a well-known phenomenon, that occurs everywhere not just in developing countries. Nevertheless, many quarry operations are located close to residential areas, which means that the impact of airborne dust is a problem that has to be dealt with not only because of occupational requirements but also in terms of broad environmental regulations. Local communities are now becoming more aware of the health impacts of dust inhalation and raising the issue.

Dust Emissions

Dust is generated on quarry operation during the breaking down process. Thus, the airborne concentration depends on the energy put into the process. Consequently, screened product is then the transported using large amounts of heavy machinery creating movement of traffic, which causes erosion and dust bloom clouds which is severe dust pollution that is then carried through the surrounding by wind. Therefore is not only the quarry process itself but the collection, loading, transporting and delivery of the material that also  constitutes considerable dust emissions . Unless dust generation is prevented, dust moves with ambient air and can have far reaching consequences in locations far from the source. The consequences of this process can have an effect on vegetation, animals, and health of the workers and local communities.   [/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width="1/2"][vc_column_text] [caption id="attachment_7396" align="alignnone" width="1280"]Quarries - Mine Haul Road Dust Abatement Quarry Road Dust Abatement[/caption]

Dust Mitigation Solutions for Quarries

Dust control needs to be a key priority on any quarry operation. Prevention and control measures should not be applied in an ad hoc manner but integrated into comprehensive, well-managed and sustainable programs. Dust Prevention and effective Dust Control Systems should be implemented  to protect both workers’ health, surrounding communities, and the environment.

What are the Consequences of Not Complying with Environmental Regulations?

Governments need to step up and establish and effectively implement Air Quality Control laws that will regulate dust emissions and provide penalties for violation as this will provide the needed motivation for Quarry operators to implement effective dust control measures. Quarry companies that do not show reasonable responsibility in limiting the dust they create should have financial consequences or even suspension – an example of this being implemented occurred in 2015 when the Ministry of Environment of the UAE suspended the operation permits of 14 quarry and crusher operators.

Water is Life and soon it may be more precious than Gold

Water is an essential element of life, we all need it not only to drink; but it also plays an important role in economic growth. Presence of water resources, or rather lack of them, can also be the cause of geopolitical conflicts.  As human demand for water increases water scarcity becomes apparent in very different ways. [/content_block]

[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner css=".vc_custom_1501629428148{padding: 15px !important;}"][vc_column_inner width="1/2" css=".vc_custom_1501629414809{padding: 15px !important;}"][vc_column_text]World population is projected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050 according to UN DESA report. Increasing population means increasing demand for water, combined with the decreasing supply, makes water conservation more important now than ever.

WATER IN MINING

As for many different industries, water is also essential in Mining. According to Global Water Intelligence, the mining industry is probably the second largest industrial user of water in the world after the power generation industry. It uses between seven and nine billion cubic meters of water per year, which is  as much water as a country such as  Nigeria or Malaysia use in  a year. This level of usage has growing environmental, social and political impacts. [pullquote style="left" quote="dark"]Water has a profound impact on every stage of a mines’ life:[/pullquote] from feasibility to development and operations, and then closure . Taking into consideration the outlook of the global water resources,  mining companies are facing increasing risks. The extraction of raw materials requires huge amounts of water, and long-term availability as well as the costs associated with obtaining constant access to water can sometimes be underestimated. Therefore, it is crucial to promote awareness of the environmental impacts among the mining industry professionals. [custom_frame_center shadow="on"]water is precious[/custom_frame_center] Recent decades have provided more stringent environmental regulations worldwide. The compliance with new and more strict legislations, as well as greater financial demands, are forcing mining companies to evaluate the issue of water in many different ways. Many Mining concerns are adopting new methods to optimize consumption of water through best management practices (BMP) and the introduction of innovative technologies. These include: recirculation of water in operations; desalinization and direct use of salt water; improved tailings operation management through the development of thickening techniques that increase concentrations of solids (and lower percentages of water) for large scale industrial production;  the selection of sites with easy filtration control;  among others. WATER AND DUST CONTROL

It is expected that the water shortage will be intensified with almost all forms of economic development, but if managed correctly, many of its causes can be anticipated, avoided or mitigated. One of the mining activities that consumes significant amount of water that can be avoided is Dust Control on Mine Haul Roads. It is also important to remember that poor road management and substantial watering can result in increased road and mobile equipment deterioration and in the long run costly maintenance. From this perspective, environmentally responsible practices related to the elimination of water for dust control should become an integral part of a modern mining operation.  There are alternative technologies for long term dust suppression that significantly reduce water useage. [pullquote2 style="left" quote="dark"]An important objective of Soil Solutions is to promote sustainable Dust Control solutions that completely eliminate water required for Dust Control on Mine Haul Roads. [/pullquote2] One application of EBS (Engineered Base Stabilizer) as a surface seal provides a water resistant  road surface fully protected from erosion and materialloss.  The hard surface eliminates dust.  This improved surface allows for an improved and  safer road that has a significantly reduced environmental impact . The high  performance level of EBS Soil Stabilizer allows for significant water savings while delivering long-term dust control solutions. Today's meaning of David and Goliath - Melcolm Gladwell

Melcolm Gladwell’s key points of the book and how to implement them into your business or private life One of my favorite Bible stories is David and Goliath, where the Philistine giant comes across a small shepherd boy. David and Goliath confront each other. Nine-foot tall Goliath, wearing full armor and javelin, against David, equipped only with a sling, doomed to failure.
As Goliath moved in for the kill, David reached into his bag and slung one of his stones at Goliath's exposed forehead.  Seconds after he fell face down on the ground. David then took Goliath's sword, killed him and cut off his head. When the Philistines saw that their hero was dead, they turned and ran. "David and Goliath" became a phrase that represents an underdog situation, a contest where a smaller, weaker opponent faces a much bigger, stronger adversary.
[/content_block][/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] [caption id="" align="alignright" width="333"]David and Goliath - Book by Malcolm Gladwell Malcolm Gladwell's Bestseller "David and Gliath - Underdogs, Misfits and the Art of Battling Giants"[/caption] But for centuries, we may have understood this story wrong. In Malcolm Gladwell's book, "David & Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits and the Art of Battling Giants," Melcolm Gladwell turns that biblical story around and shows that David was not an underdog at all. He had a number of advantages that no one paid attention to. The  major theme of the book is that  what may appear as  disadvantages can turn out to be advantages and vice versa. Malcolm challenges our assumptions of what is good or bad, what is the strength and advantage. He also points out that every difficult hardship in life teach us skills, produces resiliency and courage, that everyone else will wish they had. Each chapter presents examples from the world of sports, culture, and business pshygology  where the perceived weakness, in a long run, turned out to be a strength. Some of his observations are about dyslexia, the loss of a parent, and poverty. Melcolm Gladwell explores the possibility that people who are faced with a major disadvantage and find the determination and strength to fight against it, during the process  acquire skills and experience that no formal education can teach.  It confirms that failure is a step of success. Melcolm Gladwell applies the same analogy to business, giving examples of an underdog companies and their competitors. Very often it is the  small, upstart underdogs, with their new solutions to old problems, that often beat the Goliaths. The lesson here is not  simply that when a powerful competitor takes on a smaller one, the smaller one might nevertheless win. Instead, it is about understanding the circumstances and taking into account that the key to “the battle” can sometimes be not that obvious. [pullquote style="right" quote="dark"]Do not let fear of failure stop you from trying to reach your goal[/pullquote]

Are you facing a giant problem or impossible situation, thinking that the situation is overwhelming and beyond your capabilities to overcome it?

Soil Solutions was contacted for the design, construction and sealing of these areas using locally available ground sand to create a more natual and visually appealing appearance to eliminate the blowing of the sand.

Steps taken for the Istanbul Memorial Forest upgrade Project:

The ground sand was mixed, placed, shaped and compacted creating a smooth surface for the application of an EBS Surface Seal. The EBS Soil Stabilizer was applied in several coats and allowed to penetrate before opening the areas for public use. The EBS constructed and sealed areas will now be UV and water resistant, free from erosion and deterioration, prevent any blowing sand, blend in with the surrounding environment and preserve the area for the many visitors to the Memorial Forest. Mining Drones are becoming Mining Operations Big Brother!

Mining Drones

It is a constant challenge to keep up with advancing technology and perhaps the most exciting technology that developed significantly in the last few years is that of Drones. Drones are more formally known as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) or Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UASs). The aircraft may be remotely controlled or can fly autonomously through software-controlled flight plans.[/content_block]

[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner css=".vc_custom_1501629428148{padding: 15px !important;}"][vc_column_inner width="1/3" css=".vc_custom_1501629414809{padding: 15px !important;}"][vc_column_text]Drones originated from military applications, now the use of drones is vastly expanding into commercial, scientific, and recreational applications. Drones are flying over back yards, following sportsmen and documenting weddings. Thanks to drones blood and medicines are delivered across Rwanda, remote islands receive medical supplies, emergency drones also tested to provide life-saving help to cardiac arrest cases.

DRONES IN MINING

Due to the digital revolution, it has become necessary and significantly more cost effective to integrate modern and developing technologies into the mining space. Drones are an example of this being implemented. With such a wide range of applications,  it was only a matter of time until drones made their mark  on the mining industry.  Mining professionals have confirmed that the use of drones has enhanced efficiency at some of the largest mining operations. Drone provide the opportunity for  the Mining industry to become more intelligent, more productive and safer. Currently  drones are deployed to conduct a wide range of important tasks that we will discuss in this blog post. [custom_frame_center shadow="on"]mining drone[/custom_frame_center][/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width="1/3"][vc_column_text]

MINING DRONES APPLICATIONS

Mining Drones can take part in different mine related functions including, exploration, surveillance, regulation and operation of mines, managing waste dumps and post-mining reclamation of land. For example, instead of contracting a pilot to take aerial survey photos, a drone can be operated by one of the mining certified employees or an outsourced operator. By using a drone flight over their entire site operators can access powerful analytics to easily determine areas that need to be checked and have a complete view of their site. Drones are also able to provide visuals of hard-to-reach areas, without incurring the risk of sending someone. Drone technology is being used in Stockpile and Tailings management by to safely measure and analyze the active sites. According to Emmanuel de Maistre - a Vice-President at Airware, one the world's largest commercial drones startup:
Safety is key. Safety issues are the #1 reason why mining and construction companies sometimes have to shut down their sites. Stockpile surveying is still a long and dangerous process – I would even say it is an outdated process. Professionals are aware that flying a drone to measure sites and machinery, while the surveyor is outside of the quarry, is much safer and makes a big difference. This is known, but professionals also need to understand that utilizing drone-based safety assessments can prove that their site is in line with local regulations.”
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width="1/3"][vc_column_text][custom_frame_center shadow="on"]Mining Drones[/custom_frame_center] Drones are also being used to help evaluate the lifespan of mining waste sites, by flying over a Tailings Pond and a Slag Heap and collecting imagery of them for analysis. The objective of this process is to use the collected aerial imagery and compare it over time. The comparison helps determine how quickly the footprint is changing over time and how close the pond is to reaching its maximum capacity. This information can also be used to plan when to increase the size of the dam or area of the pond. Utilizing drones for such operations is more affordable and offers fewer risks. Drones also have the ability to conduct near-real-time dust monitoring. Blast-associated dust is a significant potential hazard, and innovative monitoring methods using drones are currently explored. Drones are designed to carry air quality sensors to allow precise characterization of blasting plumes in near-real time. Data by the Ministry of Mining in India says that the use of drones can be very useful in underground mining to limit the human activities in dangerous and problematic locations as well as for the surveillance to curb illegal mining activities.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width="stretch_row" content_placement="middle" css=".vc_custom_1504646597788{padding-top: 25px !important;background-color: rgba(37,69,90,0.91) !important;*background-color: rgb(37,69,90) !important;}"][vc_column width="2/3"][vc_column_text]

Evaluation of Data and Information

However, as Emmanuel de Maistre states,

Rolling Resistance and its Implication on the Work Cycle Efficiency of Mining Operations

In today’s fast paced world, characterized by a constant geopolitical turmoil and rapidly changing prices of commodities; the efficiency and cost effectiveness of a mining operation has never been so important.

Mine Haul Trucks are the most commonly used means of mining and hauling of materials. These heavy trucks use a great amount of energy.  The amount of energy used is dependent on many factors including the payload speed, truck engine characteristics, tire pressure, and most importantly, the condition of the haul road

Numerous studies conducted by engineers and mining professionals have shown that surprisingly one of the most overlooked factors that can assist in maximizing the use and performance of haul trucks operational costs is to minimize the rolling resistance.

What is rolling resistance?

Rolling Resistance sometimes referred to as Rolling Friction or Rolling Drag can be described as the force resisting the motion when a body (such as a ball, tire, or wheel) rolls on a surface. It is mainly caused by non-elastic effects; that is, not all the energy needed for deformation (or movement) of the wheel, roadbed, etc. is recovered when the pressure is removed.

Rolling Resistance:

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width="1/3"][vc_column_text]Moreover, the rolling resistance and the smoothness of the haul road also affect tire life and wear, and fatigue of haul truck components. Haul Road conditions directly impact productivity levels and impact: [custom_frame_center shadow="on"]Efficient Haul Roads[/custom_frame_center]*Taken from the Caterpillar Forward Mining, Efficient Haul Roads, A Design & Maintenance Guide

How to minimize the effect of the rolling resistance?

Soil Solutions provide the ability for mining companies to substantially reduce maintenance & increasing the efficiency of work cycles through the improvement of mine haul and access road networks, which have a direct result of significantly reduced maintenance costs, improved safety, and overall protection of the capital investment. Below you can see some quantifiable cost saving benefits that can be achieved through the implementation of our products and services: [custom_frame_center shadow="on"]Improved roads leads to cost savings[/custom_frame_center] The graph above shows how in practice, reduced the rolling resistance of 5% may result in an increase in production by 10% and reduced production costs by 35%. Such findings have enormous significance in view of falling prices of raw materials versus the cost of mining as well as the high maintenance costs of the mine operation.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width="1/3" css=".vc_custom_1505998883610{margin-right: 15px !important;margin-left: 15px !important;border-top-width: 1px !important;border-right-width: 1px !important;border-bottom-width: 1px !important;border-left-width: 1px !important;padding-top: 20px !important;padding-right: 20px !important;padding-bottom: 20px !important;padding-left: 20px !important;background-color: rgba(255,255,255,0.72) !important;*background-color: rgb(255,255,255) !important;border-radius: 5px !important;}"][vc_widget_sidebar sidebar_id="sidebar-17"][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width="1/3"][vc_column_text css=".vc_custom_1505997083444{border-top-width: 2px !important;border-right-width: 2px !important;border-bottom-width: 2px !important;border-left-width: 2px !important;padding-top: 15px !important;padding-right: 15px !important;padding-bottom: 15px !important;padding-left: 15px !important;background-color: rgba(255,255,255,0.65) !important;*background-color: rgb(255,255,255) !important;border-radius: 5px !important;}"]Additional benefits  ONE Application of EBS Surface Seal will protect the stabilized surface from loss of fine material, provide effective dust and erosion control depending on application rate and traffic.  Most importantly this road surface will never require grading or watering, providing a sustainable solution and significantly reduced maintenance delivering Reduced Costs & Benefits. Another important factor that is strictly correlated to the substantial reduction in diesel use – is the reduction of the CO2 emissions. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width="1/3"][vc_column_text][custom_frame_center shadow="on"]Reduced CO2 Emissions[/custom_frame_center]

Example of Carbon Emission Reduction

For example, in the above graphic, you can see that using EBS Soil Stabilizer to stabilize mine haul roads results in a reduction of fossil fuel consumption of 18.75 liters of diesel[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width="1/3"][vc_column_text]per hour / per vehicle, which equates to a 40% reduction in CO2 emissions. Such results could significantly reduce the impact on the environment.
By reducing the resistance that trucks encounter during a hauling cycle, the overall fuel efficiency has the potential to be improved, which plays a critical role in the reduction of gas emissions.
Haul road maintenance is an essential task that should receive daily attention. An Improved Mine Access or Haul Road will have a positive effect and significant cost savings across many different areas, and provide many diverse benefits, which will collectively improve the overall operations of the Mine.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width="stretch_row" css=".vc_custom_1505310293685{margin-top: -55px !important;padding-top: 40px !important;background: #593f21 url(https://www.soilsolutions.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/Rolling-Resistance-mine-haul-road-headerr.jpg?id=10407) !important;}"][vc_column width="2/3"][vc_column_text]
